I call this the legitimacy triangle. This is what makes a brand image. Strategic comms people work on all aspects - and ALL employees are responsible for the most important one - direct contact with people in our communities!

This is why it's so important to ensure your stakeholders and audiences truly comprehend what you are communicating. Perceptions change meanings.

This is oh so true for comms people as well. Stop being a full-time firefighter ... and start (even if in a small increment) being a fire prevention officer!

This brand strategy applies to LE as well! PIOs and bosses take note! Your brand is not your logo, it's how people feel about and connect with you.

Elected officials have a role to play during your emergency.

Help them understand:

- A united voice reduces misinformation and panic.

- Sharing official information on their social feeds helps amplify the message.

- They are a conduit to your residents.

When's the last time you examined the culture of your agency? Are FTOs still staying to new officers, 'Forget everything you learned in the academy, this is how we do it here?' Culture doesn't simply start at the top - it permeates every nook and cranny.

Once a crisis is over, it's time to do a hotwash or debrief ... do it with your team, and then invite local media to another one to talk about what went right and where both parties could improve for the next time.

An excellent article that, once again, highlights the importance of great communication for an executive. police1.com/chiefs-sheriff…
