“Best fans in baseball”. All it takes is 4 games under .500 and they become just like every other fanbase that loses: fair weather. Don’t tell me Miami is unique in that regard.

It’s a “Pup Night” at PNC Park tonight, & that reminds me of an incredible story that Vin Scully shared OTD 4/23/88 during - broadcast.

1996 - Ballpark announcer Art McKennan passed away at age 89. Starting out as a team errand boy, he did odd jobs around the park, working his way up to become the voice of the Pirates at Forbes Field from 1948 until it closed, & then at TRS until 1987 w/Sunday games thru '93.

Great listen with the legendary Guy Junker.

To piggyback on the convo at the end of the episode, going to PNC Park and hearing Guy announce “Your First Place Pittsburgh Pirates” as the club took the field was a huge thrill as a long-time fan.

This was the “coming out party” for the Leyland Era Pittsburgh Pirates

A classic game that’s a microcosm of everything we loved about that team.
