When I'm not doing historian stuff, I enjoy creating sweaty names when I'm birding. There's a red-shouldered hawk in my neighborhood that I named Howard the Hawk. Turns out he has a mate. Should it be Lauren Bacawl, Chantal Hawkerman, or Amy Hawkerling? (Not quitting my day job.)

One of my favorite moments as a professor is when students realize how much they can infer about the daily lived experiences of people from a source as impersonal as a Sanborn fire insurance map. It's like a little fanfare plays and they level up.

Rereading Railroaded for tomorrow's class on Gilded Age corporations and I was not prepared for Richard White to go hard like this: 'In 1888 Edward Bellamy, surely one of the worst novelists of the nineteenth century, wrote, as bad novelists often do, a best seller.'

The Temple History Department and I have postponed my Urban History Workshop in order to support striking graduate students. I hope that by the time I make it to Philly, grad students will have a fair contract, living wage, and good benefits.

Really appreciate "It's too many cars, stupid"'s analysis of the 'redlining vampire' and all the ways that the popular discourse around redlining has actually *impoverished* our collective understanding of racial capitalism

Redlining has gone from a niche academic topic to part of our common language for understanding historic racial inequality. Do we emphasize it too much, particularly redlining done by the HOLC during the New Deal?

Thinking of making property transaction research into an assignment to teach *gestures vaguely* all the things about cities and housing inequality.
