So good it won a Pulitzer Prize. Colson Whitehead’s historical fiction novel is a gripping tale about the secret network of tracks and tunnels that guided escaped slaves to freedom. Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the terrors of the antebellum era.

One of our favorite examples of historical fiction for children is The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff. It's a wonderful adventure set in Roman Britain and we like to think that it inspired Gladiator.

Farmer Boy is the second book in the Little House series. It tells the story of how Laura Ingalls Wilder’s husband, Almanzo, grew up. This Harper edition is just lovely.

Flora is a 10-year-old girl whose parents were divorced. One day, the neighbor's vacuum cleaner sucked up a squirrel & somehow the squirrel gained a superpower. Flora named the squirrel Ulysses & they became best friends. A Newbery Medal winner from 2014.
