When Mary was nine, her father followed tradition and sent her to Ludlow Castle on the Welsh marches, to learn how to govern the principality. It was an apprenticeship for queenship.

Mary drew in her breath sharply. She had not doubted that her stepmother would be found guilty, but the news still shocked her.
This was a pivotal moment in the life of Mary Tudor, who is the subject of my forthcoming novel, Mary I: Queen of Sorrows.

Mary I has become a controversial figure among historians. Much research has been done on her, and in recent years, there has been a shift in opinion and a concerted attempt to rehabilitate her reputation. What's my view of her? You'll have to read the book to find out!

Writing my forthcoming novel, Mary I: Queen of Sorrows, was a challenging experience, as I wanted to show how this princess with such promise, who was loved by so many who knew her, became the woman we know as Bloody Mary.

In glorious medieval Shrewsbury, above the old Market Hall, I was delighted to see a statue of Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, the father of Edward IV and Richard III. I'm writing about him at the moment in Queens at War, the last of my books on England's medieval queens.

In beautiful, breath-taking Snowdonia, I stopped in Conwy to see the castle built by Edward I, but it was closed, so I visited Plas Mawr, the amazing Tudor town house of the Wynne family of Gwydir, and it has been wonderfully restored.

My fascination with Gwydir lies in the fact that in Tudor times, it was the home of Catherine of Berain, who married four times and was known as 'the Mother of Wales'. More intriguingly, she was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII.

If you go to Wales, try to visit Gwydir Castle, a medieval house that had fallen almost to ruin before it was lovingly restored over many years by its present owners.
