The Little Girl's Aunt had gone to the theatre in London with her sister-a musical at the Adelphi, Mr Cinders. It was very charming & very funny & afterwards they went for supper at Rules. Surrounded by London chatter, they both felt quite giddy & ordered a bottle of champagne.

It was William Caxton with his free-floating bilingualism in English and Dutch who first put the h in ghost. He'd spent so long in the Low Countries, his language languished mid-North Sea and all his books are full of Dutchisms, particularly Reynard the Fox, which he translated…
