When I started at Newsnight, the interview was like a PhD viva, if your PhD was about every random aspect of business and economics. They asked me to bring 10x original story ideas and ruthlessly ripped every one of them to shreds - and then said: give us another one. I had a…

Tonight I will be raising a glass to the good ship Newsnight and all who have sailed on her, the joy and value they’ve given viewers, and the unlucky ones there now the music has stopped. Sometimes the library of Alexandria burns, the children play in the ruins of the forum etc

BBC's Newsnight to be cut back as part of savings plan. Devastating news for the team. Known for it’s distinctive journalism and films. bbc.co.uk/news/entertain…

It’s true. BBC Newsnight is our Hotel California. All of us who checked out never really left. We lived through extraordinary times with the most incredible team spirit. And our thoughts are with the whole team tonight.

The team has been living and working with this news since it was leaked to the Times two months ago but it's still devastating. It's been a privilege to work with so many talented friends and colleagues over the years.

For decades Newsnight has sent teams around the world to do original journalism, held power to account, analysed complex geo-politics and exposed wrong-doing. It's a sad day, and not just for those of us who once worked there.

Newsnight is a key reason why so many of us became BBC journalists. It was so central to the brand. It’s sad to see its demise.

The honour of presenting BBC Newsnight falls to me tonight. I have worked on the programme for 32 years, around the world, risking my life many times for its journalism. You can well imagine my feelings at cuts to our staff and budget of more than 50% bbc.co.uk/news/entertain…

Without original films, investigations and its own correspondents, hard to see how it's Newsnight. So proud to have worked on this show, with one of the very best teams in news, anywhere. We need more of what Newsnight has always been about, not less. bbc.co.uk/news/entertain…

I once stumbled across the Dutch PM doing a live Q&A in The Hague. I said I was from Newsnight, could I ask a question. His response: “Of course!” Then he turned to his Dutch audience and said: “Newsnight, an excellent programme. You can watch it on BBC 2 at 11:30 Dutch time.”

Important thread by John Burn-Murdoch on embedding OSINT teams in traditional newsrooms - big flag though is over reliance on OSINT which is increasingly being faked by AI means picking up the phone to human contacts is still the most important means of verification
