If you'd like a break from crisis contemplation, come with me to the Great Bear Rainforest to see how field biologists count their blessings.
This is a story about bioblitzing, and the app (iNaturalist) helping it go viral.
It's also a love song to moss.

Something like 95% of Canada's Garry oak-associated ecosystems have been lost, and probably 99% of the biomass in what remains is invasive grasses, but let us pause and marvel in the remainder, all here because of careful First Nations' tending over millennia. Glorious stuff

Am I oversharing today? These shots are just TOO GOOD. I feel so lucky to spend my office hours peaking into the lives of the animals who call these sacred mountains home.

Our new manuscript is out showing how impacted Homalco territory on the coast - melting triggered a landslide that caused a 100 m high lake tsunami that destroyed a watershed and changed the ocean up to 70 km away

Successful First Nations-led caribou conservation, but highly controversial + $$$ in an industrial landscape. Starts w killing wolves (!) & capturing & penning caribou (!!). The cost of oil & gas in BC. Only works w LOTS of habitat protection & HUGE amount of habitat restoration
