Launching today… our #TreeSparrow Recovery Project!
Can we save this bird from local extinction?! 🤞🤞
Please keep a lookout for this species and report any sightings.
A morning ringing at Sevenhampton today saw us catch 3 Fieldfare, a seasons best 36 Redwing and a surprise Blackcap. Half the site is still flooded and there's more rain on the way #birdringing
Yesterday we gave a bird ringing demonstration at Swindon Lagoons to members of Wiltshire Ornithological Society. We showed our guests 136 birds of 18 species including 4 Teal, 21 Chiffchaffs and 6 Goldcrests. Highlight was a Long Tailed Tit at 7.5 years old and a Reed Bunting at 6 years old.
Had my first ever short-eared owl encounter over the weekend on Salisbury Plains. It was truly special.

Ace morning on the Wiltshire Ornithological Society bird ringing demonstration at Swindon STW. Huge thanks to matt prior Nigel Pleass and the team for sharing their passion and knowledge so freely
After thinking that Willow Tit has been extinct in Wiltshire for 2 years we ringed one yesterday! Sadly, extinction is still certain, but they are trying to persist. 5 Marsh Tits was also great. Tony Juniper funding is needed for serious research to find the cause of the decline.
On Saturday night I led a night safari for junior members of Wiltshire Ornithological Society. I came away utterly inspired by the enthusiasm of the children. We ringed Grey Partridge, Fieldfare & 2 Skylarks. Look at the joy on the lads face! He loved ageing/sexing the Fieldfare using a guide book
Early morning net set at Sevenhampton paid off today with a rather nice adult Woodcock, only the 4th I've mist-netted here. Among the usual Redwing's was our 3rd Fieldfare of the winter season. Left for work with my Dad still there trying for more Redpoll's #birdringing
Some of the 9 Common Crossbill's ringed while out in a Wiltshire woodland yesterday with matt prior . Fantastic morning ringing & easy to forget we also ringed a Woodcock, Tawny Owl, 20+ Siskin, 15+Lesser Redpoll & a few Brambling & Marsh Tit's #birdringing
Nice variety at Sevenhampton today before the un-forecast rainstarted. A Fieldfare was in with the 9 Redwing caught at dawn. An adult Blackcap that could just in or just leaving. Also a Marsh Tit, Magpie & an unusual catch of Starling for the site #birdringingu
North Wiltshire Ringing Group ringing control: Chiffchaff ringed at Ilkeston, Derbyshire on 6th August 2023, controlled by us on Salisbury Plain 8th October 2023. 63 days since ringed, 199km movement #birdringing #migration
I am always happy for the Wilts Rural Crime team to stop and ask me what I am doing in a farm field in Wiltshire. The team tonight got to see a stunning Short-eared Owl that I had just ringed.
North Wiltshire Ringing Group ringing recovery: Blackcap ringed by us on Salisbury Plain on 20th August 2023, controlled Cruzinha, Faro, Portugal on 28th September 2023. 39 days since ringed, 1653km movement #birdringing #Migration
With most of my Sevenhampton site underwater still it was limited nets today. Brilliant morning with 21 Redwing, & the 1st 2 Fieldfare of the Autumn. Looks like it will be a good winter for Lesser Redpoll's locally with 18 ringed today & more passing over #birdringing #migration
