A critical AI literacy approach (h/t Maha Bali, PhD مها بالي 🌵🇵🇸) adds friction to systems intended to be frictionless. This, to me, is a strength of humanities education, to '[turn] our attention to those seams we are seduced into not seeing.' (Michele Elam, from read.dukeupress.edu/american-liter… )

Maha Bali, PhD مها بالي 🌵🇵🇸 I LOVE this. All about the co-developed conversations and approaches. A colleague of mine has a beautiful statement that basically says 'I won't decide whether you will or won't, but we will talk together about the very real opportunities AND ethical challenges'

Today in class I realized there is something more important to teach our students, other than whether WE think they should use AI or avoid it. And it's to let them try it for a purpose, and THEY decide the extent to which it may be helpful or harmful for what THEY need to do

Mentoring is such a rewarding experience. I don't think I do it because I am generous, I do it because it is just so rewarding to see and feel our impact with other people, and I learn so much when I mentor others, even those with much less experience than mine

It makes me sad that I think academics want to make sure they appear 'rigorous' more than they want to appear 'kind', regardless of which of these values they genuinely embody and hold dearest.

Guiding Students to Reflect on AI-Generated Feedback, my case for a teacher-designed, dedicated app for formative feedback that helps students use AI to support writing for thinking and communication with humans. (Abram Anders' panel at ).

I don't know about you, but I was really impressed that one of my students tied Chimamanda Ngozi Adeche's 'danger of a single story' with our discussions around AI, and talked about 'AI's single story' that many people hold (about how gr8it is, when in reality it is more complex)

I think it's vital that educators and students grapple with AI's environmental costs. Asking students to conduct a technoethical audit is one means for doing so. I joined Sepehr Vakil to write a Civics of Technology post about how we structured the activity. civicsoftechnology.org/blog/conductin…

I'm new to the fields studying the effects of AI on the environment. One invaluable resource that I've found to help me learn about issues related to AI's climate impacts is Mél Hogan 😷 🏳️‍🌈 🍪's podcast The Data Fix. Listen at: shows.acast.com/the-data-fix

As I continue to learn about AI and its roles in climate change, I decided to make an open library. You can find resources and add your own - it's definitely a work-in-progress - to the Against AI and Its Environmental Harms Library at: pad.riseup.net/p/Against_AI_a…

'Governing AI for Humanity'--important, right?
We can all be part of that conversation. The United Nations AI Advisory Body is seeking feedback on the approach they've suggested in their interim report. Submit your input to their form by 3/31/24. un.org/en/ai-advisory… 1/

Watch & listen to protests if you cannot go in person. Be refreshed by that energy.

Read & listen to living Palestinians directly: in podcasts & news, poetry, fiction, film, non-fiction, music. Draw on their determination.

Palestine will be free because Palestine must be free.

Remember this:
Although the powerful are willing to exact endless violence on us, their own threshold for loss is very low.

We don't know whether what we do today will bring liberation. But we don't know that it won't!

Let yourself feel the bravery there, the possibility.
