Why do people equate hard work with suffering?

I've never had more fun than when I'm working my ass off on something that was important to me.

This. So much this. If I listened to my inner critic telling me to give up, I'd have never been published and wouldn't currently have publishers interested in my future work.

The inner critic has a place, but if it isn't telling you 'Good, but make the next one better' dump it.
