The ad says that this property has '2 spacious bedrooms with built in robes' and a 'large study area'. 🤔

What can a landlord get away with? Charging $875 a week for a mould- and rat-infested hovel of horrors with no internal doors, apparently.

Strong words here from Tenants' Union of NSW on why that's been allowed to happen—'mum and dad' need to be held accountable.

When I see a previously empty and unused house is now providing shelter to someone who would otherwise remain homeless

Libertarians: you should be able to do what you want as long as it doesn't harm other people. Government should stay out of the way.
Renters: *start living in empty houses*
Libertarians: ¡no! ¡not like that!

Radical? Australians have a long and storied history of squatters' protests! Here's some sage advice from Mr. McCormack, one of the leaders of a group which squatted on the Cairns Agricultural Show fairgrounds in 1932 until the government agreed to provide better housing:

hope Mick de Brenni is losing as much sleep over stories like this (and the many more in SwelteringCities's Summer Survey and our Cruel Summers report!) as his constituent renters are in these substandard, unbearably hot homes

also super weird that Chris Minns committed to ending unfair evictions BEFORE the election, and now it's over a year AFTER the election and NSW Labor is yet to make the change 🤔

So weird that landlords keep realising they have irredeemably bad tenants immediately after being asked to do some minor home repair 🙃 theguardian.com/australia-news…

Every time we launch a report an extreme heat in rentals, we hear from people who weren't part of our research, but whose stories are just as harrowing. Why are governments accepting these conditions for renters?
