In Hartlepool this afternoon for International Workers’ Memorial Day when we come together each year to remember those who lost their lives in the workplace and those who suffer from work-related injury and disease.

#OnThisDay 2012. Neil Greatrex, former president of the Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM) was found guilty of stealing £150,000 from a Lincolnshire nursing home fund.

The charity had been established to help sick and injured mineworkers.

#OnThisDay 1984. Sixty pickets from county Durham try to stop the unloading of a Panamanian coaster with a cargo of French coal at Norwich.

Two miners had seized a dinghy and tried to board the ship but were eventually stopped by police.
