As an ASA Sociology member, I voted yes to the Sociologists for Palestine resolution.

In this moment, nothing is more crucial than the way we attend to, support, love on, and bring awareness to this genocide.

Yes! Sociologists are always lamenting our lack of influence, but shying away when it's time to take a stance. Enough is enough!

Yesterday, I earned tenure!

I’m not a very emotional person but when I heard the news I got teary-eyed.

I thought of how I’ve struggled to find my place in academia and had to continually push myself to be better, especially as a first gen college student and gay black man.

I saw an interview with someone on faculty at Columbia who said administrators first suspended students *so* that they could then arrest them for trespassing. Evil.

wtf is the point of having a tenure track job if you can’t even stand in solidarity w/ your students?? Like wtf are we even doing if we’re not helping them fight the good fight? Isn’t that what teaching is about? Taking what happens in the classroom and applying it to the world?

The grace of God. I’m not even kidding lmao

2020: attacks on BLM
2022: attacks on CRT
2023: attacks on “woke”
2024: attacks on DEI

It’s the same thing, different year: anti-Blackness and white supremacy.

I heard a therapist say, “Your feelings are always valid, your behavior is not.” She explained by saying feel what you feel BUT you need to be accountable for what you do as a result of those feelings.

The irony that a university named in honor of the most infamous genocider of the Americas—Columbus—is also ground zero for crushing anti-genocide protests in the twenty-first century should not escape notice.

#Sociology folks, if the reason you hesitate to say yes on Sociologists for Palestine’s resolution is that you don’t know enough - here is a folder chock full of resources on colonialism generally and Palestine in particular!

ASA Sociology uses voting policies similar to racist voter ID laws. ASA is expensive so scholars at richer/whiter schools have more funding to register yearly/early which means greater access to vote. ASA could make voting easy but creates these barriers to limit organizational change
