@BrexileInBerlin

I left the UK for Berlin after the EU referendum. I talk here about settling in, learning the language and becoming German.

Heute vor 62 Jahren wurde die Berliner Mauer errichtet und brachte jahrzehntelang Teilung und Tod mit sich. Einen aktuellen Bezug dazu stellte Chris Ward πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ @christopherward.bsky.soci in seiner Bewerbungsrede als EU-Spitzenkandidat der LD her.

German phrase of the day: 'jemandem ans Bein pissen'.

Or literally, 'to piss on someone's leg'.

Means to criticise or annoy.

Similar to British English idioms, but instead of a parade, or chips, it's a leg...

German word of the day, inspired by the current government (and, I suppose, the precious six-week one).

Verschlimmbessern.

To attempt to make something better, but by doing so you end up making it worse.

We've all broken the law
- Rt Hon Nadine Dorries

Brits don't break the law
- also Rt Hon Nadine Dorries

Good she references the rules though. Important to remember she thinks they apply differently to her government.

German phrase of the week (sadly because I've had to use it):

'Ich habe die Nase voll.'

Which means 'I'm sick and tired / fed up'. But directly translates to 'I have a full nose' or 'my nose is full'.
