John was a craftsman. You would turn up to mix a documentary with a vague idea about pace & feel which he would patiently turn into reality. It was like watching a painter at work, creating a structure & then delicately adding the details, the light & the shade. RIP.

John Simpson died today after a long illness. A BBC Northern Ireland sound engineer for 37 years, he was one of the most brilliantly creative people I ever met. Anyone who knew him as a friend, as I did, was immensely blessed. My thoughts are with his beloved (and amazing) wife Denise.
