Swing by the Aquatic Bird House this month to see scarlet ibis. Their saturated scarlet-colored plumage comes from the carotenes found in the foods they eat, which include a variety of crustaceans, mollusks, and insects.

Enjoy this brought to you by Keeper Leela in the Aquatic Bird House marsh exhibit. This roseate spoonbill and giant wood rail just had a bath and chose to dry off and groom on the same branch. The range of these species overlaps in parts of South America.

Jean Ehret was one of the first women to work in the Ornithology Dept. in 1974. She was the first brooder room keeper and cared for newly hatched birds. When she left the Bronx Zoo in 1995, she supervised a department that had become 50 percent women.
