Firefighters told the The New York Times that fire hydrants ran dry as they tried to battle the deadly Lahaina blaze.

That forced them to essentially give up on stopping the fire and instead try to help people flee.

The people of Maui are remarkable. For days, they have been shuttling water in pickup trucks and gas by boat, distributing aid with little help from government agencies.
