It was such a pleasure to review Sarah Fox's wonderful Giving Birth in Eighteenth-Century England! You can read the review at digitalcommons.usf.edu/abo/vol13/iss2… but best of all the book itself is open access at: uolpress.co.uk/book/giving-bi…

First pass at a plot bead diagram (by act) for The Spanish Tragedy as part of our course and production work next season! What a monster this play is.

Wild the notes I took four years ago on some of this material:

'...basically the prosecution’s reading of the trial but about dogs. Took pics. Is very mean.'

Favorite item so far: a vivd, long letter about a shipwreck that killed several performers (including Theophilus Cibber) from 1758, and a gossipy af tale of bad comedian Mr. Usher and his wife Mrs. Usher with whom the letter-writer was 'discovered' one morn the prev. year.

'You say [Barry] has engaged a very fine company. Nothing can spirit up the people here so much as the mention of the actors he is to bring over with him. All the geese in England are swans here.' --Macnamara Morgan to Charles Macklin

'Tate Wilkinson had acted under Garrick and Foote; and, if we are to believe his memoirs, acted tragedy and comedy with equal effect. The truth is, he was a bad actor, but a good mimic; and Foote encouraged him, to annoy Garrick.'

Most extra-illustrated material is bigger than the original publication because it gives more room for the engravings, letters, etc. that are being added by the collector, but I can only describe the size of Peg Woffington's ex-ill biography as 'hold my beer and watch this.'
