Throughout this time, I have had the honour of caring for patients and worked alongside fantastic colleagues. Although recent years have been the most challenging for the NHS, nurses, midwives, nursing associates and health and care support staff have together achieved so much.

🧵Today, after five years as CNO for England and a career in the NHS for almost 40 years, I have announced that I will be retiring later this year. My role as CNO has, undoubtedly, been the highlight of my career in the NHS and has been a privilege.

🧵An enduring strength of the NHS is its diverse workforce and on many aspects of race equality we have made welcome progress, but while colleagues from ethnic minority backgrounds are more likely to experience bullying, abuse and harassment, there is still work to be done.

Racial discrimination is unacceptable and it has no place in health and care. As nurses and midwives, we all have a responsibility under our professional code to challenge discriminatory behaviour, creating an environment where people are treated with dignity and respect.

This #RaceEqualityWeek , I encourage all #teamCNO colleagues to use the Combatting racial discrimination against minority ethnic nurses, midwives and nursing associates resource and to #ListenActChange .

Earlier this week I attended the launch of the Too Hot To Handle Report which explores how healthcare organisations respond to allegations of racism. It was incredibly powerful and I urge colleagues to use the report and its recommendations to bring about positive change.
