The five people who died in the Channel this morning knew that there was a very real risk of death when they set sail in a small boat. At least, the adults did. Death was, to use a word in the news a lot this morning, a 'deterrent'. It didn't work.

Today, far-right and football hooligan groups from throughout the UK will congregate in Central London for a St George’s Day demonstration.

The gathering has been organised by Tommy Robinson ( real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon,) and coincides with a court hearing after Robinson failed to comply with a direction to leave an area during a march against antisemitism on 26th November 2023.

We will be monitoring today’s St George’s Day demonstration and identifying key individuals involved.

The officer may have been more careful with his words, but Mr Falter was provocative to the point that an arrest for breach of the peace might have been justified
