Although famous for his portrayal of the Liverpudlian Yosser Hughes, Bernard Hill was born in Blackley, Manchester. He was brought up in a Catholic family of miners. Hill attended Xaverian College, and then Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama.

Beautiful interior of the Prince's Theatre, Manchester. 1900. The theatre was on Oxford St, at the edge of St Peter's Sq. Opened 1864 with a production of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Demolished in the 1940s.
