New paper out today! Using termites adorned with little paper capes, we found that conspicuous stripes captured the attention of jumping spider predators but reduced attacks.

Read it open-access here: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/epdf/10.10…

If you are one of the people in the last few days who said “It’s complicated. I’m still trying to learn what’s going on.” Or if you think a condemnation of Israel is anti-Semitic, please please please watch this if nothing else at all today.

New from me: History needs to know we saw this happening, we understood what it was and we did nothing to prevent it.
We need to know that to be on the right side of history requires that we grow a backbone in the present.

And... if NSERC funding isn't meant to cover the entire cost of research (but wow would it ever be amazing if it could!!!), then WHY is the application so full of hurdles, barriers, and nastiness that require us to take longer than any other grant to write?

Something I'm hearing a lot lately:

'with just an NSERC, I can't....'

Seems like we need to rethink how we evaluate the significance of certain grants, the amount of work that we ask of applicants, and also how Canada should fund research.

Finally, the paper from my side project is out! A new intertidal trapdoor spider (Idioctis) species found in Taiwan. Still can remember how difficult it is to fish them out from the coral rocks with an electric toothbrush.

Making interview questions available before interview is such a simple thing that can help people perform at their best and be less anxious. We don't routinely have to come up with answers on the spot in our jobs, so we shouldn't expect interview candidates to either.
