Enjoying Boxing Day with new books - this is from Angela Harding’s beautiful, ‘The Year Unfolding: A Printmaker’s View’. Her work is gorgeous. I wish I could draw.

The Eleventh Window. The fog had cleared & the stars were fierce-silvered & bell-clear in the black, moonless sky. Old Fox was stacking firewood at the linny by the scullery wall. How still the world was! He could hear the tinkling wireless in the parlour & for a moment, the…

The Tenth Window. Outside was dark & damp & foggy, but Miss Rabbit was having a very pleasant evening by the fire. She had lit the candles on her Christmas tree, and had started to wrap her first presents. She started with her many cousins, for whom she had bought dozens of…

‘Normalise neònachas’; ‘Accept àraidness’ - I make a quiet (and hopefully diplomatic) plea for churches to remember that not everyone is an extrovert.

I had the pleasure of discussing this today on RnanG. What I love is that Tom Lennie has gently peeled away the layers of varnish to reveal a story that is MORE amazing in its true state. No need to gild the lily of revival; it’s miracle enough without embellishment.

Really enjoyed the evening, and was pleased to be able to present the Urras with a copy of Stornoway Trust’s biography, ‘Beacon in the West’, by Roger Hutchinson - and delighted to receive a beautiful photo of the Carloway Broch from them.

I contend that the two most versatile words in English are ‘fancy’ and ‘carry-on’. Not coincidentally they have been appropriated as honorary Gaelic words. NB ‘duine fancy’ may translate as ‘fancy man’, but the meanings are not the same. Abair carry-on.

Neil Miller Gunn, born on this day in 1891 and - in my opinion - the finest Scottish writer. I always felt he was writing the thoughts I could not articulate for myself. His writing about nature goes beyond mere description: it evokes a landscape, history and community, all one.
