Appreciated the chance to talk with Kayla Benjamin about the great strides DC has made in recycling (our contamination rate for single family recycling is down to 11%!), as well as some of the areas we definitely have room for improvement (multi-family recycling remains at 27%!)

Yes! PET clamshells like these are recyclable in DC 👌

Paper labels are a problematic contaminant for plastic packages, so we always want to remove them (as well as any absorption pads) first!

📸 Meet Mike Young, a dedicated DC resident participating in DPW's curbside composting pilot program. Here he is showing Megan Clarke from News Channel 7 and her team how he sets out his food waste for composting. An eco-friendly step towards a greener city!

Great question! Yes, we can recycle prescription bottles in DC (they’re made of high value polypropylene plastic)

Many US communities can also recycle them, but not in the 90%+ range like PET and HDPE bottles.

*** they do need to be above 2”x2” and have paper labels removed!

So well put! Compliance with DC’s recycling requirements for multifamily and businesses isn’t “I have a bin”…

It’s “I have enough recycling bins for the amount of recycling tenants/patrons produce”

If a building or business in DC is providing recycling, but not enough = a fine

Let’s aspire to Randy Clarke level responsiveness and transparency when there’s hiccups in DC’s solid waste services
