Shame on whoever called in the State Police to UVA today. This looks like the kind of political theatre a right-wing governor would do.

Nothing says “I’m a tough guy” quite like calling in police in riot gear to deal with 20 kids in REI tents singing songs and studying.

We need a timeline of what happened and full explanation for why State Police came onto UVA Grounds to tear gas and arrest members of our community.

To use tents as the scapegoat to turn a peaceful protest into a play of round-em-up is… somehow on par.

This is porcine behavior. Putting students at risk for exercising free speech. Jim Ryan UVA has the power to stop this but they won’t. In fact, they started it by silently changing policy this morning.

You can disagree with them. But, to be intentionally devious and change the policy THIS MORNING to use unnecessary police force against students is nasty work. Jim Ryan what happened to being a great and good institution?

I’m no authority on UVA policy (I’ve only been a student or faculty here for 18 years, so I’m still learning!) but surely the best reading of this is that recreational tents don’t need a permit, right?

When people sue to block housing in Charlottesville, they’re suing to block housing for city and school employees to live in the community they serve
