Just a reminder (I know LIS are aware): the MARC format for online cataloguing developed in the 1960s. Already in the mid-1980s, many library catalogues were available online. Calls for ‘card catalogues’ would take us back over 50 years, ‘print only acquisition’ over 30 years.
