London's roads were originally forged by the hooves of horses. Their domestication has been one of the great drivers of human progress. In the UK, hundreds of thousands of riders dedicate their lives to equestrian welfare. Without them, our horse population would crash.

Because the countryside is an afterthought for legislators, the scandal of rural road safety is ignored. Delivery drivers do a tough job, but they are encouraged to drive too quickly on narrow lanes with blind bends. Too many accidents and near misses.

Overheard today: a complaint about poor shop service, in which the aggrieved customer said they were “devastated” when they almost certainly meant “disappointed”. A feature of our times is the loss of control over the language we use. Everyday utterances incline to over-reaction.

Saw Sheen playing NHS founder Nye Bevan last night. He was brilliant. But the event was like a medieval morality play, a quasi-religious ceremony to give the NHS a foundational myth. Bevan as Moses, leading us from darkness. Deeply biased art from a taxpayer-subsidised theatre.
