Only a few days left to participate in the RFIG management review
Our opinion is that without the remit to co management, leverage fisher knowledge & the responsibility to produce ecosystems based fisheries management plans the IFG's are worse than useless

Well done Open Seas ; when licencing dredge & other fisheries Scottish Government must do so in accordance with their own rules
TBF that doesn't actually sound like a lot to ask!
Mind you there's a heap of their own rules Scot Gov Marine just ignore Mairi Gougeon

Since Scotland's fisheries for inshore demersal fin-fish ended we have seen little recovery in many once abundant populations
It's arguable a combination of by-catch & extensive habitat modification from towed demersal gears are the big factors influencing recovery

10 years ago Scottish Government commissioned a report that recommended an inshore limit which would secure existing & new jobs as well as huge environmental gains
Scot Gov Marine just ignored it & then Scot Gov Rural had no hope of achieving GES

When in the EU they ignored this but UK law also says Scot Gov Marine & Mairi Gougeon are meant, when allocating access to fishing opportunity; to use transparent and objective criteria, including environmental, social and economic criteria

It was easy to get government & industry support to ban sand eel fishing because we weren't doing any in the UK
But did this breach the trade and cooperation agreement with the EU?

“This is a significant step forward for our fisheries and food policies. Prawns caught using creels are a low-carbon source of protein and have significantly less impact on the seabed compared to other methods, and virtually no bycatch'

By distributing more than 50 percent of fishing quotas above scientific advice the government are neglecting the long-term interests of fishermen and coastal communities!
They are giving this quota to prop up big industry whilst the small scale fleet and our communities struggle!

A byelaw restricting bottom towed gear in a further 13 MPAs, covering an area of almost 400 square km of English waters, is now in effect. This brings the total area off our coast covered by Marine Management Organisation byelaws to almost 18,000 square km. loom.ly/d989kzE
