The YTD murder dashboard is now online with 2024 data covering 186 cities. Murder is down 20.8% in our city sample.

New: it's early, but murder is down 20% in 180+ cities with any available YTD data (almost all cities through at least Feb). Murder is down 20% in 59 cities with data through Mar. Suggests a large drop in 2024 is possible though too early to say for sure.

The FBI released quarterly data for Q4 2023 yesterday. This preliminary data suggests murder likely declined at the fastest rate ever recorded in 2023 while reported violent crime and property crime also fell nationally. My writeup:

DOJ should publish crime data of quality, breadth and timeliness as the DOE and USDA do for energy/ag commodities respectively. As a step towards that goal, we Arnold Ventures are funding the creation of the Real Time Crime Index to provide accurate and actionable trend data.

New from me: carjackings fell in 2023 in most cities with available data though teasing out a national carjacking trend is quite challenging.
