Bernard Hill’s portrayal of Yosser Hughes was one of the most important cultural moments of the 80s. He symbolised the destruction of human dignity by dead-eyed Thatcherism. If only we had the same heft of working class writers and actors now to address today’s inequities. RIP

NeilMackay I'm 52 next week and this was a big watch in my house. I came from a big working class family in Glasgow and we also felt the brunt of Thatcherism. A great actor and the writing was on the money.. As you say, we need more of this.

Hard as it is to believe when reading the news, the homicide rate in London has *halved* over the past 20 years.

In the past two decades London has gained 1.7 million extra residents and yet the annual number of homicides has gone down from 212 in 2003 to 110 in 2023.

Interesting that in London, which is the UK’s most diverse city, Reform UK managed only 3.2% of the vote in the Mayoral election. When human beings actually live with people from different backgrounds, they tend to get along just fine.
