I’ve saved lecture 3 to watch this afternoon (had a bit of a party in our Poole flat last night). Who better to invite to talk about bias in datasets than Professor Sue Black OBE Keynote Speaker 🇺🇦

This is BIG & TIMELY.
The New York Times suing OpenAI for Copyright Infringement.
Would be a landmark case as the courts decide. Is it OK to train models using 'data' without consent or legal access?

A lot of discussion is about data, but not enough on the right…

Absolutely. If we are this weak about regulating the use of a relatively uncomplicated AI technology like face recognition, it doesn’t bode well for us regulating technology like generative AI

Wendy Hall Gary Barnett The pressure on peer review is so huge though, 35k submissions to Neurips needing 90k reviews....

At the root of this is a fact, people write too many papers, it's just that simple.

One paper per author per year. We might even read some of them.

This had been worrying me for ages. It is possibly the end of scholarly publishing as we know it. Those institutions who set and require standards in publishing need to stand firm

My point exactly. That’s why I love being a researcher. There is a huge sense of fulfilment about being ahead of the game. But this is also why researchers rarely make the big bucks. It’s all about what rocks your boat cf. generative AI😊

Hip hip hooray for science. As you know I just had a new hip fitted. My surgeon said he didn’t use cement. He used a titanium implant coated with hydroxyapatite which Peter Chandler worked on as a researcher over 30 years ago at the beginning of this new tech. What a great Xmas present

Made it to the panto Lighthouse Poole. The staff here have got me a wheelchair to sit in which will be much more comfortable. They have been lovely and of course there are lots of Santa’s little helpers around if necessary 😊🎄
