Writing a chapter for Dawn Brookhart and my extension of SFC (w/Jan Hasbrouck, Ph.D.) focused on communication. 'When the district office shows confidence and trust in principals and provides them with autonomy, the principal-teacher relationship improves' (Robbins & Alvy, '14, 85).
Really enjoyed reading Personal & Authentic, Thomas C. Murray! Agree that this 'won't happen if our classrooms are information rich yet experience poor' (96).
'The more we focus on a testing culture, which raises the 'we don't have time for...' mantra, the less we as educators feel we can do to build relationships and culture in our classrooms....poor leadership often reinforces and prioritizes these expectations.' (Thomas C. Murray 78).
'That's the ways we've always don't it.' It's a breath of fresh air when you get leaders who are willing to be vulnerable, take risks, listen to others, share power, and work together to change systems that impact student learning (e.g., Margaret Watson, Becky Mamich, Karen Langlands Ed.D.).
'The best thing that we can give kids this school year is not a new curriculum or technology...' (Thomas C. Murray, p. 16). Sad to see #instructionalcoach positions eliminated in some districts because of budget cuts, yet these same places spending more on materials w/o support.
From Thomas C. Murray's Personal & Authentic book, 'I can guarantee that no child I taught is able to remember a single worksheet I handed out as a classroom teacher. Yet to this day, I'll hear stories about many of the experiences that we had together...' (p. 97). Agree!
