The area of Acadia National Park remains the center of Wabanaki, or “People of the Dawnland,” traditional homelands.

Wabanaki people are still connected to this area, just as their ancestors were for thousands of years.

My life experiences give me hope for the future. If an Indigenous woman from humble beginnings can be confirmed as Secretary of the US Department of the Interior, our country and its promise still holds true for everyone.

When Senator Mazie Hirono asked why I want to serve as US Department of the Interior Secretary, I shared what my dear friend Albert Shirley, who doesn't have electricity, told me. I carry a profound sense of service with me & will fight for everyone so future generations can thrive in our beautiful country.
