Long wanted to visit Hexham Abbey. It didn’t disappoint. Remarkable survival of so many late medieval panel paintings and carved wooden fittings. Here are just a few of them.

I created a cool web app using Ordnance Survey data - British Placename Mapper (placenames.rtwilson.com). It allows you to search for place names that match various criteria (starts with 'great', ends with 'burgh' etc) and plot them on an interactive map.

No way would a golf course at Coul Links be a necessity for the Highlands. It would be a major loss of nature at a UK level. Losses of nature are losses for humans too. Unfortunately, many people just don’t see our obvious connection with and dependency on the rest of nature.

In 1807, the ship Anne Marie was captured by the British Navy while sailing from the Faroe Islands to Denmark. Five packages and two hundred letters were confiscated from the ship and survived, still sealed, in the Prize Papers. What’s inside? Read below to find out. /1

A wonderful Adam Weymouth report on indigenous strains of “bere” barley in the Scottish isles:

“This is a hard place to live…. [But] locked away in bere is a genetic richness that provides some answers about how we might live in balance with the world.” inkcapjournal.co.uk/the-ancient-cr…

Attending a dendro-isotope workshop at Swansea Uni, led by Prof Neil Loader, with dendro participants from N Europe and UK. I presented on Scottish dendro challenges that dendro-isotopes could potentially assist with. Excellent workshop, impressive technique.
