When the particles that make up solar wind approach Earth (from the left here), our planet's magnetic force field mostly pushes them out of the way. But our magnetic shield isn't perfect or static, it's always changing in wave-like motions. The Earth’s magnetosphere is depicted here as white lines radiating around Earth, making an hour-glass shape around it, with Earth at the center. As the orange-colored solar wind impacts Earth on the left, where the background is otherwise yellow-green in color, it appears to blow past Earth, and the white lines of the magnetosphere undulate as they are impacted, with some of them trailing out far to the right. To the right of Earth and under the trailing white lines, the background changes to a dark cool blue.
