OTD in 1950, HM Submarine Truculent sank after colliding with a freighter, SS Divina. The sub was on trials from Chatham. 

The incident led to the development of the 'Truculent light', an all-round white light on the bow of British submarines to ensure they remained visible.

OTD in 1812, the Admiralty commissioned Marc Isambard Brunel to design a new steam-powered sawmill at the Royal Naval Dockyard, Chatham.

Brunel's design had a large steam-powered machine that operated eight large frames that held up to 36 saws and staffed by only two attendants.

Christmas is celebrated by the Royal Navy, whether it's on land or at sea. 

Here is the crew of HMS MARLBOROUGH (1914) celebrating Christmas Day in 1925. She was Chatham manned ship with men from HMS Pembroke (Chatham Division) assigned to her.

On This Day in 1805 the body of Vice Admiral Viscount Nelson was transferred from the 1st rate ship, VICTORY, at the Nore onto Commissioner Grey’s yacht, 'The Chatham' which had come from Sheerness.
