An utterly unacceptable state of affairs. The peer-reviewed evidence of how unsafe it is for patients to be languishing in insufficiently-resourced EDs is overwhelming. A comprehensive overhaul of non-elective care provision is more necessary now than at any previous time.

If only the provision of safe and effective care was this simple. Beds don't help care for anyone. People do the caring - and we desperately need many more of them, across all health professions. There a few things more dangerous than an understaffed hospital - however many beds.

Nothing new in these headlines but what it does reinforce is the need for scrupulous and effective risk and governance processes to be in place. Nowhere is there greater clinical risk than in a system under operational pressure. Incident reporting is key. bbc.co.uk/news/health-67…
