NEW: A Buckingham Palace spokesman said:
“His Majesty is ‘so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did’.
Following their time in hospital together, HM has ‘remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks.’

Official royal photos have been manipulated since the royals started posing for photographers back in the 1850s. Here is one of my favourites where Queen Elizabeth (mother of Elizabeth II) had her face 'retouched' (taken from A. Schwarzenbach's excellent article on royal photos).

King’s Foundation gets £6m in spring budget. Interesting to see tax payers’ money going into the charity that has had so many ups and downs. My story here ⬇️

I mean, I like the cover of my 'The Conservative Party after Brexit' but this would have been even better! Superb summary of the last decade and a half from Morten Morland

An important and worrying story this morning from Natasha Livingstone. Andrew Lownie and I are quoted expressing concern at the news that a number of files on the royal family that had previously been released to the National Archives have been closed again.

ChatGPT is not designed to return facts. It’s designed to generate text that sounds plausible. And it’s a product of what it was trained on. (Let’s be charitable and overlook the fear of “agenda”.) If you’re a teacher and you don’t know that, what hope is there for your students?

'It is the best recent progressive treatment of the monarchy the reviewer has come across, and should be read by anyone with an interest in the Crown’s contested future.'

Thanks John Ritzema & The Critic for this thoughtful review of After Elizabeth

I'm quoted in this BBC News (UK) piece on young British people's changing attitudes to the monarchy. The 18-to-24s have never been so sceptical about the benefits of constitutional monarchy.

I'm quoted in this The Times and The Sunday Times piece emphasising that the monarchy finds itself at an impasse. A slimmed down monarchy requires a slimming down of royal public engagements and this will mean, inevitably, a reduction in the everyday reach of the institution.

The only phrase that springs to mind is ‘God Save the King’ 🇦🇺 👑 🇬🇧 Dr Ed Owens - shades of the early 1950s yet again (not so happily though)

The trope of workaholic monarch is a century old & part of the palace PR narrative that to be royal is to be inexorably burdened. Mostly nonsense, but v.effective in generating sympathy for the sovereign and key in the late 20thC to rationalizing the increasing cost of the crown.

Evidence pointing to a conplete lack of royal transparency over a) money and b) behind-the-scenes political influence continues to mount.

The 1967-1975 closure of Suez Canal and the eventual geopolitical terms around its reopening show just how little US military power has been deployed to secure Red Sea transit, despite the assumption that post-1945 the US acts to guarantee global freedom of navigation. 1/8
