- A gorgeous roundel from Herculaneum (although findspot unclear). That the woman sports a lionskin and club identifies the pair as Hercules and Ompale, the Lydian Queen, whom he served for a year.

I bought a copy of 'Varus' (Pen & Sword Books) and I was very touched to find this comment in the Acknowledgements, page vi. That was very kind of you, Dr Jo Ball!

A human touch to this epitaph that no one has yet mentioned: the hired engraver failed to include Simplex's profession in the formal inscription. This evidently would not do, so underneath another hand – I surmise Simplex himself – has chiselled in 'Centurion of Legio VI V'

Unveiling a piece of Roman mischief! Can you imagine the chaos in the courtyard as this tile captures a playful chase between a dog and a cat? How many times have you witnessed a similar scene unfold?

Despite the awful weather earlier in the week our Period 1 team are making excellent progress at Vindolanda. Some fabulous Roman flagstones just beneath the surface.

🚨NEW 🚨

I was on site at Pompeii shortly after they made the stunning discovery of exquisite frescoes of figures from the Trojan War in a newly uncovered winter dining room.

Story from the site is here:

Sharing this again because it’s so appropriate for 2024

One of the interpretations of this jar is that it held food for an animal companion on board the ship, probably an otter!

The tombstone of a named Quintus Petilius Secundus, alongside a modern colourised replica (showing how eye-catching these stones originally were!) He died at the age of 25 after 5 years in the Army, & is depicted on the stone with some of his weapons (but no armour)

The level of detail on this sarcophagus never ceases to amaze me. I couldn't tear myself away the first time I saw it in person!

A beautiful glass jug, in absolutely amazing condition - it was made about 1800-1900 years, & is a lovely example of ancient glasswork Archaeology

This book by Dr Jo Ball is fantastic. Technically accomplished, bringing archaeology/historic texts together, a gripping account of what became a psychological disaster for the Empire. Varus reframed: accomplished, but trusted too much in both Arminius & the model of Romanisation.
