A 🧵 on burnout

Yesterday I learned that when people are burnt out, their amygdala enlarges. For all you non-neuroscientists, here's what that means and why it's important. 1/

I just saw a poor old lady get forcibly arrested by police and Coles staff for shoplifting food. I told the police that I'll pay for her food and let her go and then I got threatened with being arrested for 'obstructing police'. Boycott Coles and Woolworths

I know I'm a shit grant application writer but to get feedback that 'research on disability just isn't as relevant now that the pandemic is over' truly is astounding to see someone with a doctorate and critical thinking skills say to me in writing

Pleased to find out today that the University of Queensland is increasing the stipend for PhD students.

Institutions that value their students make sure they have adequate financial support.

Thank you everyone who advocated for this. ❤️🙌🏻

Very proud to work at an institution that publicly shares academic integrity statistics. All educational institutions should; it facilitates benchmarking and transparency deakin.edu.au/__data/assets/…

“Your paper is too readable, which gives me the impression that you’re writing for a general audience rather than an academic one”. Ok then.

Basically the entire academic system is stacked to reward white men doing work that interests white men and maintains white male supremacy.

Every woman I know saw immediately what kind of guy Bruce Lehrmann was. We’ve all met a version of him before. It’s called the ‘creep factor’ and he has it in spades. That’s why so many of us believed Brittany from the get go. Because, yeh sister, we see him.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog about what it's really like working in British academia as it retreats in some disarray. People seemed to find it helpful. So here it is again: voicesofacademia.com/2024/04/05/its…

I’m so sick of academics who make PhD students and postdocs feel bad about themselves. I see it happen frequently and it’s awful.

If you’re one of those people, please stop and consider how you can support them instead. Our early career scholars deserve better.

Words make a difference. Whether I'm sending an email to students, staff, or faculty, I start with 'Dear Colleagues'

No matter what our education background, titles, or job duties, we are all colleagues and should treat each other with the respect inherent in that word.

This.
How many people haven't come forward, or won't come forward, because they've seen what this country does to rape victims in the justice system and media?

The self-own is satisfying, everything that came before it is horrifying.

All the men who enabled him, who acted as his 'pr adviser' who saw him as hot property, who protected him, who played with him, who enabled him, who saw nothing wrong in playing with a bloke like him

You are the definition of rape culture

That's it. That's exactly what it is

2. Hopefully, Justice Michael Lee’s comprehensive findings will change public opinion about how victim-survivors should ‘behave’ after being raped.

Ultimately, I’m optimistic that the world we be a safer place for the next generation.

Extremely important to have this point made explicitly by Justice Lee :

'The notion a woman is expected to either fight or flight to be accepted as having been a victim of sexual assault is not only not reasonably open but wrongheaded.”

The ripples of this judgement will be felt by women everywhere - women who have been shamed, dismissed and not believed.
