In my book 'Quranic Arabic' I argue that if you look closely at the Quranic rasm you can deduce that the text has been composed in Hijazi Arabic (and later classicized into more mixed forms in the reading traditions). Can we identify dialects in poetry?

I suspect a senior scholar has plagiarized my work during peer review. They rejected my submission but published an article with similar arguments. What can I do? This isn't the first time this senior scholar has plagiarized my work. Meanwhile, my article kept getting rejected...

Oğuzhan Duru (Adamlık Mücadelesi) I think some of the mushrikūn likely did seek forgiveness from Allāh and prayed to Him. What distinguished the mushrikūn from mu’minūn was unbelief in Hereafter, some cultic practices that entailed serving beings other than Allāh, and rejecting Muḥammad’s status as Prophet.

1/10 What is the difference between islām & īmān—or between aslama & āmana, mentioned in Q 49:14–17?

TL;DR: islām means to accept monotheistic worship, manifest in ṣalāt & zakāt. This should not be conflated with genuine faith, which is manifest in readiness to fight for God.

But there has been far less outrage and headlines about the actual shutting down by police of an international conference on Palestine in Berlin, having already barred one speaker, Ghassan Abu Sitta, rector of Glasgow University, entering Germany... aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/12… 2/

My dad went to a Catholic boarding school, in Lebanon, alongside Muslim and Jewish boys. Daily mass (in Latin!) was compulsory for all and nobody had any issue with that. They were there for a quality education and only had to participate, not believe. One of my fave anecdotes:

This theater still stands (inside the Fisher Building in Detroit), but it was gutted in the 1960s so it could be 'modernized'.

I love living in Istanbul's old Jewish/Christian quarter. The streets are medieval, dotted with Greek/Armenian churches, synagogues, and mosques from centuries ago.

Sounds of life, like the cries of babies or children playing, waft into your house with the morning breeze.

As a side note, I have recently stopped using the term 'fire-altar' for the ātašdān. This very western label has led to too many misunderstandings - especially by scholars who come from a Jewish or Christian background. It's simply not an altar and is in fact antithetical to it.

If people genuinely care about gender inequalities, they should openly engage with empirical evidence, recognise the biggest drivers, and at least try to address them.

Western demand for oil has enabled Saudi Arabia to export Salafism, & become seen as blessed by God.

This is the filthy corner of Muslim Twitter: abuse a guy for his call towards pluralism and then everyone joins in and start a sort of online lynching forum.

Excited to be teaching a new seminar, The Qur’an & the Bible, next fall. A first & ongoing task will be to complicate the reason some students will have thought they signed up—the parallel that “Both religions have a holy book, so… let’s compare.” Well, kind of, but… 1/🧵
