The saddest part of my job is seeing the ecosystem I love and live to protect dying in front of my eyes… The fourth global coral bleaching event has been confirmed. calacademy.org/press/releases…

About 70 yrs ago, the Xerces Blue butterfly, native only to SF sand dunes, went extinct. Last week, a collaboration with California Academy of Sciences, Revive & Restore, and Presidio of San Francisco introduced a carefully selected surrogate: the Silvery Blue. Amazing regeneration! apnews.com/article/san-fr…

Assisted evolution. Humans meddling with animal genetics to save species that are endangered because of us. A slippery slope that, while necessary in some cases, demands extreme caution. nytimes.com/2024/04/14/sci…

If we’re to find solutions to our biggest challenges, we must first agree on what those challenges are, and aren’t. At the moment, media-driven fear about social chaos is preventing many of us from truly understanding, let alone tackling, the deeper eco-crisis driven by humanity.

Please tell your son that we don’t know for sure what Spinosaurus used its tail for. It may have helped to regulate its body temperature. Some say it was used to help propel Spinosaurus through the water. Others, including me, think it helped to make this giant look even bigger.

Natural history collections truly are priceless, critical to addressing the ongoing polycrisis. We need to stop treating them like neglected stepchildren and embrace their essential role at this pivotal moment. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Very happy to share that my research team's most recent paper is now available at geosociety!

In short, we found that dammed river corridors in the Rocky Mountains are incredibly fire resistant, even during megafires.

I agree Tom. That is indeed my biggest critique of the idea, which is founded on a misunderstanding of deep time.

I have never been a fan of the idea of naming a new geological time period—an epoch—after humans. This notion seemed flawed on many levels. It seems that an August body of geoscientists has agreed. The Anthropocene is dead. Long live the Anthropocene science.org/content/articl…
