The late Arno Penzias often said 'Most people get Nobels for things they were looking for, we got one for something we were trying to get rid of!' 🙂

First washing-machine load of school half-term holiday is the aftermath of yesterday's success stretching the distance DHSBoys Ten Tors teams can walk in heavy rain, including training them to walk safely in single file on lanes as well as navigating South Dartmoor's peat bogs.

A simple model of convection in a global atmosphere links large temperature differences to strong winds. Is it too much of a conspiracy theory to note that Gove removed convection from Physics GCSE syllabi when UK teachers were banned from describing a 'climate emergency'?

Thankyou Dr Dan Jones for posting this, which my Y13 class were discussing last week trying to estimate if their calculated mass of the moon was the expected order of magnitude. Students tend to think the Moon is smaller and closer than it actually is.

DHSBoys Ten Tors trainees were up in time to see the sunrise this morning. So fortunate our school supports us in adjusting our plans so students can have these experiences safely whatever weather Dartmoor provides in our outdoor classroom this week.

What's more frightening, that the far right are saying the same in the USA as here in the UK, or the emotive language used, or how many people in the USA say a loud 'Amen' to the outbursts of these modern false prophets?

GCSE Physics students should identify if this trend is linear or exponential. Some A-level students could be guided to discuss how positive feedback might be expected to produce an exponential increase in temperature. Fortunately, the climate system is not that simple.

Earth just had its hottest month humans have ever directly measured and likely the hottest in over 120,000 years.

July 2023 was a staggering 0.33°C (0.60°F) warmer than the 2nd warmest month on record and becomes the first month to breach 1.5°C above preindustrial levels…

This is exciting news and the challenge is how to adapt, given the pace of AI development. So AI needs to be supervised by a Consultant Radiologist, like today's Registrar Radiologists are supervised. Will future registrars then be trained by the AI? theguardian.com/society/2023/a…

What is happening to our political system when the PM can try to win votes by lying about the impact of North Sea gas on energy prices, and promising to make residential streets more dangerous for children?

Outside of science, acknowledging mistakes and changing one’s mind is often regarded as weakness when it’s really a strength. Nowadays, acknowledging that many issues are complex with both sides of a debate having a point is called sitting on the fence and also seen as weakness.

I am grateful for everything our students and their parents have done to work around the days we had to close the school. I regret it took this long, but hope the outcome will keep state education alive enough for more students to experience excellence in the coming years.

Working amongst physicists I sometimes wonder if it is a small minority who are 'neurotypical', with the rest of us spread along a wide spectrum, some with but most without formal diagnosis. I am unqualified to diagnose, but allowing for some ASC/ADHD in all seems pragmatic.

This breaking news makes me proud to be a citizen of a nation whose judges can recognise a commonsense interpretation of the English language and protect us from landowners who would ban so many of the activities for which our national parks exist. theguardian.com/environment/20…
