#OnThisDay 1984. Bob Clay, the Labour MP for Sunderland North, was one of 16 people arrested on the picket line.

Clay had seen a man being beaten up by the police and after approaching the police he was arrested for obstruction.

The Durham Miners Hall was once known as the 'Pitman's Parliament', giving a voice to miners in a time when most did not have a vote. Styled on a Methodist chapel, each pit had a 'seat' for a representative. Today it continues to be a space for activism and cultural practice. 🏛️

40 years on from the events of the 84/85 miners strike a pardon for these injustices can not come quick enough.

I was at primary school in 1979 when the Golborne Colliery explosion happened.

Some of the kids I knew lost their dad.

So it was wonderful to see our village turn out in force to remember the 10 miners killed on that March day.

Chris Mullin Ten years ago the great #TonyBenn passed. He was inspiring thoughtful kind and a brilliant and incisive orator. A true friend of the Durham Miners' Association and a warrior for the working class. A political giant, the likes of which is rarely seen today in the House of Commons.
