The woman highlighted in red is Lucy Higgs Nichols. Born into slavery in Tennessee, she managed to escape during the Civil War and eventually found her way to the 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment, which was stationed nearby. Nichols remained with the regiment and served as a nurse
