“The message from GOP senators: Suffer, little children.”
Thank you Catherine Rampell for this warning: The child tax credit bill passed by the House could die because of Republican opposition in the Senate. Why kill a bill that’s pro-family, pro-life & paid for? washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/…

Joe Biden must build an unusual coalition this year. Part of it will be a conservative alignment to defend our institutions against Trump’s threat. The other part will be a progressive movement for economic change.

Happy birthday to Albert Hirschman, who would be 109 today.

Hirschman—anti-fascist, resistance hero, later a development economist—may be the most interesting person to ever take up the profession.

🧵 and blog post on his remarkable life and work.

In 2024, Joe Biden is the conservative & the progressive. He’s trying to preserve our institutions against Trump’s onslaught & is the most progressive president since the Reagan Era. He needs to show that safety & progress go together

On many fronts “Trump’s allies—overt & tacit alike—seek to run interference for his corruption & likely criminality in ways that allow them to maintain a veneer of respect for the rule of law. But Trump keeps demanding that they openly pervert the rule of law”

“Here’s why Americans under 40 are so disillusioned with capitalism…Young people in America have come of age during the Great Recession, the sluggish recovery that followed and then the coronavirus pandemic.”

Some years ago, Anglican theologian N.T. Wright gave an Easter sermon arguing Jesus “died to exhaust the power of this world’s rulers.” It would be a shame if a would-be worldly ruler named Trump made it increasingly hard for many to hear the Easter message at all.

The NBC ruckus over Ronna McDaniel’s brief career as a political commentator may seem unrelated to Donald Trump’s venture into selling MAGA-branded Bibles. But both tell the same story: Trump is warping our nation’s core institutions.

I agree with EJ Dionne:

“A better kind of Republicanism is not possible as long as most of the party genuflects to Trump….A little hardball in pursuit of the power needed to defeat Trumpism is not hypocrisy. It’s a necessity.”

My latest Economic Policy Institute research with Katherine deCourcy finds:
· Low-wage workers’ wages surged between 2019 and 2023 after decades of slow growth
· The fastest wage growth over the last four years has been among historically disadvantaged groups

Why, asks ⁦Michael Tomasky⁩, can’t Dems talk about real wages rising faster than the spike in the cost of living since the pandemic — and that, for the first time in decades, wage growth is consistently stronger in the middle and bottom than at the top? newrepublic.com/article/180093…

Oh dear! Dems try to hold the Senate by showing how right-wing the Republican Party has become?
In defense of “meddling” in primaries: Electing not-as-bad GOP senators is a poor alternative to holding actual power given GOP subservience to Trump

Do I long for the days when moderate and even liberal Republicans could thrive and have real influence? You bet. But a better kind of Republicanism is not possible as long as most of the party genuflects to Trump.
