I thought I'd start today with 'Lyme Regis' by John Cooper from 1935 which is in our show 'East London Group: Dorset Days' Lighthouse Poole now & until 08/04/23 (Tues-Sat: 10am-8pm: free entry). #JohnCooper #LymeRegis #Dorset #Dorset Days #ELG
Good evening AUSSIE Twit π¦πΊ & thank you, that is most kind. The online resources NLS Map Collections are a gold-mine of information & offer one a glimpse in to the past, in many ways. In this view of 'Appledore' by Brynhild Parker from 1932 one can pick out the features on the map. #ELG
Good evening, Jacqui Jacqui Wicks & what an interesting painting: maybe someone here will recognise the style. Walter Steggles also sketched 'Berwick-upon-Tweed Castle' & a view of 'Berwick-upon-Tweed' that I'm sure you'll recognise, both of which date from 1936. #WalterSteggles
How extraordinary, Jacqui Jacqui Wicks! Here are the two preparatory sketches for 'Berwick-upon-Tweed' by Walter Steggles from 1936 that I referred to in my earlier Tweet. #WalterSteggles #BerwickUponTweed #ELG
Great memories too, Jacqui, I expect! Jacqui Wicks Thanks for allowing me to use your photo. Here's one from your neck of the woods. This is 'Berwick-upon-Tweed' by Walter Steggles from his post-war work but based on sketches from 1936. #WalterSteggles #BerwickUponTweed #ELG
Good morning, Griselda Griselda Mussett πΊπ¦ π³π¨βπ½π‘πͺπΊ π΅πΈ & thank you. Walter Steggles was standing on Slaughden Quay, which is South of the town at Aldeburgh so he was looking North. These maps, courtesy of NLS Map Collections show his approximate viewpoint. The photo is courtesy of Mary Aldeburgh Bookshop
Good morning, Richard Richard Berridge & how true, thank you. Here's a sketch of 'The Martello Tower, Aldeburgh' by Walter Steggles from 1932 which shows the opposite end of the building that is in the oil painting that I showed earlier. #WalterSteggles #Aldeburgh #Suffolk #ELG
In my opening Tweet this morning of 'Aldeburgh' by Walter Steggles I had intended to include this photo of it from our current show Lighthouse Poole along with Wally's archive photo of the view from 1932. The maps, courtesy of NLS Map Collections show his approximate viewpoint. #ELG
Good morning Another Cinna & thank you. Here's another one by Walter Steggles from our show 'East London Group: Dorset Days' which is running Lighthouse Poole now & until 08/04/23 (Tues-Sat: 10am-8pm: free entry). This is 'Dorset Landscape by him from 1938. #WalterSteggles #ELG
I thought I'd start today with 'Aldeburgh' by Walter Steggles which features in our show Lighthouse Poole now & until 08/04/23 (Tues-Sat: 10am-8pm: free entry). The view was taken from Slaughden Quay, looking North towards Aldeburgh with the River Alde to the left #WalterSteggles
Good evening B&W Thornton of Stratford-upon-Avon & thank you, as always. Also in the forthcoming sale Dreweatts 1759 on 15th March (Lots 103 & 104) are these two by Phyllis Bray: 'Knaresborough' by her from 1931 & 'Portrait of a Young Man' from c.1935. Details here:-tinyurl.com/4s7wr39r #PhyllisBray
Good evening, Liz liz bandy. Its a great shame that you & your husband won't be able to join John John Tizard & his wife when they visit Poole to see our show Lighthouse Poole. Here's some video footage of the Dorset based work from 'East London Group: Dorset Days' to compensate
Good evening @cwestweets & thank you for supporting our show Lighthouse Poole. We were in the gallery on Saturday but not until about 12.45pm so we might have missed you. Your photos feature two of the previously unseen work in the show: there are 21 in total including these four
Good evening, John John Tizard & thank you. Archibald Hattemore lived at 6 Kenmure Road in Hackney so 'The Window' was most likely painted there, I expect. This screen-grab from Street View shows Arch's house on the right. The front door says 6A, so, presumably it is now flats
Good morning, Ian Ian McFee πππΊπ¦πͺπΊ & thank you. We are both well & I hope that the same is true for you. Another one in the sale Dreweatts 1759 with a great sky is 'Norfolk Coast Scene near Blakeney' by Walter Steggles here: tinyurl.com/2ed96jp8 or the saleroom: tinyurl.com/3vb8zwst
