Looking at the # of GOP vs. Dem Super Tuesday votes in Nashville, where the more competitive GOP race made this map much more interesting. R's led in 13 council districts, compared with 1-4 in recent federal elections. Surprising red precincts downtown, east bank and midtown.

Just two years after being elected the first socialist mayor of a major American city, Emil Seidel was easily defeated by Gerhard Bading, an independent endorsed by both major parties. Bading won everywhere except the fiercely socialist German immigrant communities.

New England voted slightly more Republican in 2016 than 2012, as Trump ran ahead of Romney in both rurals and some denser ethnic white places. The biggest Democratic gains came in MA's MetroWest and CT's Gold Coast: high-income, high-college, ancestrally Republican towns.

In 2012, Barack Obama scored a 20-point win in New England. The map bears many hallmarks of a pre-Trump race; MA's South Coast and far northern ME are deep blue while Darien and Dover are still red.

It's striking how uniformly Dem. the very sparse, lower-college areas of VT are.

As it did across the country, the 2016 election produced a realignment in New England. Democratic support eroded in much of small-town Northern New England; meanwhile, Donald Trump posted the worst Republican showings since Barry Goldwater in much of eastern Massachusetts.

Finally got around to producing a corrected version of the 1984 election in Chicago using the correct boundaries.

Mondale still handily won the city due to a black bloc vote + liberal whites - but the NW/SW sides were home to tons of conservative ethnic whites.

Back in 1936, FDR won the city of Chicago in his run for president by nearly 33 points, which was better than his margin of 18 points in the state of Illinois and his margin of 24 points nationwide.

Going into the election, most polling had Lake leading and analysts generally considered the race to either be a tossup or leaning towards the Republican. Katie Hobbs defeated Kari Lake in an upset. She performed better than Biden in the suburbs of Phoenix. A thread
