We were excited to welcome elephant care consultant and Sanctuary friend, Gerry Creighton, to The Elephant Sanctuary this week. Gerry spent the morning with Care Staff and gave a presentation on the importance of herd socialization to Sanctuary Staff.

Donna has been making full use of the pulley system, which hangs preferred snacks and foods and provides enrichment for the elephants — especially when bamboo is involved. This indicates Donna’s growing comfort in interacting with her environment.

Thank you to students from Vanderbilt University and Appalachian State who spent their spring break last month volunteering at The Sanctuary! These hard workers helped with spring cleaning, elephant enrichment, built compost bins, and more. Read more about their visit: elephants.com/news/elenotes/…

Sukari and Tange have been making a mark around The Sanctuary! The two have been consuming leaves, twigs, roots, and bark, leaving tusk markings as they go. Elephants instinctively strip bark from trees because it contains nutrients, water for hydration, and fiber for digestion.
